When 26-year-old rapper Mac Miller was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment on Friday night it was inevitable that his ex-girlfriend would be mentioned in news stories about his death. Miller, whose real name was Malcolm James McCormick, was best friends with the pop singer for over five years and then dated her for two years until they split earlier this year. He became best known in this country when he performed with Grande at her One Love charity concert in Manchester last year. He had been open about his substance abuse issues throughout his career. “I am not a babysitter or a mother and no woman should feel that they need to be” In May he was arrested for driving under the influence. At the time, shortly after they had split, Grande, 25, felt pressured to explain to fans that she wasn’t responsible for Miller’s sobriety.

“I am not a babysitter or a mother and no woman should feel that they need to be,” she said in a message posted on social media. Miller onstage with Grande at her One Love concert in Manchester last year (Photo: Getty) Grande challenged the misogyny of those suggesting it was her job to fix Miller, who was born in Pittsburgh and found fame as a teenager. She said she had “tried to support his sobriety” for years, and was praying that he “figures it all out” and adding that she wanted to “know him forever.” On Friday, just hours after Miller’s death, Grande disabled comments on her social media as she posted a tribute to the man she had described since their split as “one of my best friends in the whole world”.

On Sep 8, 2018 at 2:28pm PDT At this point she was already being trolled; blamed for Miller’s death with horrific insensitivity to the fact she was in shock and morning the death of someone so significant in her life. Comments like “You should have helped him”, “You did an evil thing. You deserve the anger bestowed upon you”, “You should have stayed with him if he had a problem, as his girlfriend.

Just saying.” were posted at a rapid pace on twitter and her Instagram account. Grande’s fresh and consuming grief at losing an ex-boyfriend, and best friend, combined with this onslaught of blame and guilt is painful to imagine. Grande with her fiance Pete Davidson at the MTV Video Music Awards in August (Photo: Getty) Miller had well documented issues with drugs. Chillingly he referenced his own death on a mixtape in 2014, rapping, “a drug habit like Philip Hoffman will probably put me in a coffin.” On his albums, including the most recent Swimming, he rapped about using cocaine, angel dust and prescription drugs.

He had spoken several times about his y, a desire to change. In the end it seems as if it just proved too difficult.

No matter how hard you want to help somebody beat their addiction you’re powerless because it’s an all-consuming disease. No matter how hard you want to help somebody beat their addiction, you’re pretty powerless in the face of this all-consuming disease. You can support, and love and advise and listen. But you cannot change anything about how that person functions: only they can. If Grande had held on for Miller, there’s absolutely no guarantee he would still be alive today.

To suggest that one person holds the key to another person’s survival is wrong, and the weight of that responsibility would be too hard for anyone to bear. It was not Grande’s place to fix Miller, nor her responsibility to stay with him because he had a problem. It also should not be forgotten that this is also the woman whose concert was the target of a terrorist suicide bomb attack in Manchester in May 2017.

Her own guilt and suffering at the tragic death of 22 people at that concert has left her with PTSD. “ My anxiety has anxiety,” she told Vogue in June. — Ariana Grande (@ArianaGrande) Grande, who has, since her split from Miller, become engaged to comedian Pete Davidson, is the only one who knows what happened between her and Miller behind closed doors. The pain of watching someone you love destroy themselves can’t be underestimated. It ultimately comes down to this: Miller was responsible for his own life, his own addiction and his own happiness. It’s desperately sad that he has died. Targeting a woman who is already so filled with grief and, possibly, her own private guilt during this time, however, is nothing short of evil.

Close In the audio clip above, Daryn Jones explains why only an addict can be responsible for his or her sobriety. You can comfort and support an addict, but ultimately it’s on them. If you’ve ever dated an addict you’ll know this is true.

It’s not fair to burden Ariana Grande for Mac Miller’s choices and it’s really not fair to suggest their relationship led to Miller’s OD. And if you’re online blaming her, you have to stop and think about what you’re doing and why. Mac Miller’s death is so sad, and so infuriating.
